Do you think it’s fair that some community development projects in the UK have more sustainable access to financial support?
The biggest problem in our society right now is the north/south divide between communities in the UK.
In the North, the unemployment level is much higher and communities are suffering from factors such as fuel poverty and bigger families with less disposable income.
Whereas in the South, people live in more affluent neighbourhoods with a higher level of disposable income.
Communities in the UK are governed by the Department for Communities and Local Government who help set policies which apparently provide equality for all.
However the problem facing the UK government is that too many decisions are made at the national level.
And they realise that the problem with national policy making is that a decision to cut the overall budget for child benefits for instance may be OK in one part of the country, but not in another region.
This leads to:
- Higher unemployment
- Reduction in disposable income
Of course the UK government has a solution to this problem. The Big Society will apparently help decentralize the decision making so that it can easily be made at the local level instead of at the national level.
However, realistically we need to see the Big Society go further than simply allowing local council members to make the decisions.
We need to and must include local community leaders and members of our local communities to have a say in where we need to take immediate action.
Without that insight and knowledge, local councils cannot create effective policies that help as many people as possible.
